Holiday Hints

A little advance preparation can help you celebrate a holiday season that’s joyful rather than stressful. Share your expectation with your mate by discussing the ideas below BEFORE the season sneaks up on you.

  1. Keep your expectations realistic. Discuss them with your partner and adjust your activities, if necessary, to meet individual needs. Write some of your personal expectations below. . .
  2.

  3. Discuss your plans with your family members. Let your children, if any, be involved in decisions that affect them. Agree NOW as to when you will talk to your family (in-laws included).
  4.

  5. What limits should you set on the amount of time, money and emotions you want to invest? Write them here and agree to stick with them!
  6.

  7. Discuss any traditions you would like to break this year. Can you think of a new tradition you would like to start that would fit your family uniquely?
  8.

  9. Be aware that the holiday blues can happen to anyone, including you. Are there any specific "triggers" that have caused depression in the past (be specific)? How could these be avoided this year?
  10.

  11. Spend time alone doing what YOU want to do; agree to help your mate do the same.
  12.

  13. What things could you do as a couple to help keep the holiday spirit all year long?
